The raw tracks of “Poetry” were recorded at the Corvallis Festival Poetics, a showcase of regional and local spoken word artists. The Van Meyers with the addition of Matt Kellam on bass/electronics and Justin Schepige on Rhodes piano was to provide an atmospheric soundtrack on stage as audience members filed into the auditorium. The only problem with this was the murmur of audience members and stage hands finishing up last minute tasks. There were beautiful sonic moments captured, but nothing that could be used in full. I remedied this conflict by isolating usable shards of sound and transforming them into a sonic sound collage, a sort of musique’ concrete ambience. This was my first foray into recognizing the manipulation of raw sound as an artistic end in itself. We were honored to accompany poets Tom Blood and Heather Browne with music during their performances. Browne’s voice, herself an accomplished sound and visual artist can be heard on the track ‘Desires Unrealized.’
