The Van Meyers began as an experimental jazz project. Experimental because the only members were guitarist Doug Meyers and myself. ‘Where is the bass player?’ many people asked. We weren’t opposed to having a ‘proper’ bass player but found inspiration in the pursuit of sound and technique utilizing the minimalism of reduced musical personnel. I was also inspired by the collaborative nature of meeting other musicians who could contribute their own sound and improvisatory ideas. Thus The Van Meyers became a kind of musical collective with many musicians showing up for a session or two and then moving on. ‘Good & Bad’ was one such session with guitarist Jeff Muhr. We had never previously played together. I hit record and we discovered the following. . .
